Lovin’ the Lakes

Summer vacation started today!  Our original plan was to vacation on the Outer Banks of NC with my family.  That plan was cancelled a couple of months ago when my bil started dialysis.  I am so happy and excited to report that our prayers were answered when he received a kidney transplant on Tuesday of this week.  He’s doing extremely well, and was expected to be discharged from the hospital today.

But I digress.  When the original plan fell through, dh and I discussed several alternatives, and settled on the Finger Lakes Region on New York.  It was only about a 4 hour drive to our hotel, so we still had all afternoon to do some sightseeing.  I had a serious pain in my leg today, so we opted for a mostly driving day, driving the entire distance around Seneca Lake.

Seneca is nearly 40 miles long, so it took us most of the afternoon.  It is surrounded by over 50 wineries, and numerous State Parks.

We saw farmers out in their fields, doing things the old-fashioned way.

We saw two beautiful waterfalls.

A Cottonwood tree that we passed was just bursting with ‘cotton’.  If you enlarge this picture, it almost looks like it’s snowing!

And I just ‘loved’ the rocks.  The heart-shaped rocks in the first pic were from this same area.  They were all so flat and so smooth.  DH had fun skipping a few across the lake.

Tomorrow there is an 80% chance of rain, so we’ll probably visit a museum or two, and maybe do a little shopping.  I did spy one Quilt Shop this afternoon, but I’m saving it for later in the week when I meet up with Di!!  How about Thursday, Di?  And we plan on kayaking on two or three of these beautiful lakes before the week is over.  You won’t be seeing much stitchy stuff on this here blog over the next week, although I did pack a couple of small projects to work on in the evenings.

I leave you tonight with an excerpt from my sister’s email to family and friends earlier this week.  “We will never be able to express enough gratitude for this wonderful gift JD has received!   When you are sending us your good wishes, thoughts, prayers, etc., please consider doing the same for the family of our anonymous donor.  We understand he/she was very healthy and able to donate multiple organs -- obviously a tragedy that turned into sustaining, life-changing, events for others.  It is sobering and a gift to be celebrated and cherished.   (PLUG:  If you haven't done so already, now might be the time you consider designating yourself as an organ donor.)”

  3. Hey you've been sightseeing in my back yard (so to speak). I'm only an hour or two from the Finger Lakes. In fact my grandmother grew up in Seneca Falls. Have a nice vacation!
