Day 2 - Baxter State Park

Rock art, not far from Baxter State Park Southern Entrance
Note to self:  research your destination BEFORE you actually get there.  After blogging last night, I settled in to do some research on Baxter State Park.  The only thing I knew about it was that it was the home of Mt. Katahdin, which is what I wanted to see.  What I didn't know was that it is a total wilderness park, with no paved roads, and no amenities.  It is used primarily by hikers, backpackers, and campers.  We decided to take the main park road, from one entrance to the other, and were told that it would take 2.5 hours to drive 43 miles, at a maximum speed of 20mph.  There are many stretches of the road where it is impossible to drive that fast.  Most of the drive looks like this.
Not so scenic, you say?  But then you go around a bend and see something like this.
I give up.  I used my BIG camera today, and took BIG pictures, and I can't upload them.  DH is already asleep, so tomorrow he can help me figure out how to resize them, and I'll try again.  I did get a couple of shots of Mt. Katahdin with the smaller camera, so I'll share those, and then sign off for the night.

The moral of the story for Baxter State Park is, make sure  you have plenty of time to explore and enjoy it, and plan on hiking, not just making it a drive-thru experience!  We had even considered renting kayaks, but we just didn't allow enough time, and it was quite windy and chilly.  Brrr...  fall is coming.

Have a nice week......I know I will......  Sunny

  1. Beautiful place to visit. My husband and I do that all the time. By the time we finally get somewhere, I am tired and want to go back home. We never think about the time it will take to get there.
